Antimatter by Silvia Fava

Features

ARTIST NOTES: Antimatter explores creation through its opposite: dissolution. At its centre, the black hole becomes a symbol of Nigredo, the first stage of the alchemical Great Work. Nigredo is the descent into darkness, the breaking apart of what already exists, the necessary death that precedes transformation. The black hole is therefore not represented as an ending, but as a threshold. Matter disappears beyond its horizon, form collapses, certainty dissolves. Yet within the alchemical vision, destruction and creation are inseparable. What is broken down returns to its primordial state, ready to be transformed into something new.Around this dark centre, colour, light and celestial matter seem to emerge and dissolve simultaneously, suggesting an eternal cycle of death and rebirth. The void becomes fertile: a cosmic womb in which the boundaries of the known disappear and new possibilities can begin.Antimatter reflects the paradox at the heart of transformation. To become, something must first cease to be what it was.The black hole becomes the Nigredo of the universe: the sacred darkness before illumination, the dissolution of form before rebirth, and the mysterious point where an ending may already contain the beginning of another world.

ARTIST BIO

Silvia Fava is an Italian-born, Australian-based multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the connection between the inner world and the cosmos.

Originally trained in architecture, Silvia’s artistic journey evolved through years of working internationally as a tattoo artist, developing a distinctive visual language based on fluid movement, colour and organic abstraction. Her practice has since expanded into fine art, where she works primarily with alcohol inks and resin to create luminous, otherworldly landscapes reminiscent of galaxies, celestial phenomena and unknown worlds.

Deeply influenced by her studies of Alchemy, Hermeticism and esoteric philosophy, Silvia approaches each painting as a symbolic exploration of transformation. The ancient principle “As Above, So Below” lies at the heart of her work: the belief that the processes occurring throughout the universe can also be understood as reflections of our own inner experience.

Stars being born, matter dissolving, darkness becoming light and chaos reorganising itself into new forms become metaphors for the cycles of human existence: death and rebirth, surrender and becoming.

Through the unpredictable movement of ink and the depth created by layers of resin, Silvia works between intention and surrender, allowing each piece to evolve organically rather than imposing a predetermined outcome.

Her paintings are conceived as portals: fragments of imagined universes inviting the viewer to look beyond the visible world and, perhaps, recognise something of themselves within it.
